As a portion of this course, we try to organize local expertise on tools for using data sets on climate data and climate model data including the Coupled Model Intercomparison Projects (CMIPs) to communicate and pass on some of that knowledge. The aim of the "tips and best practices" is to provide some sense of the uses and limitations of some of the main software packages for those who are choosing what to use, and for senior graduate students to pass on the knowledge they wish they had known when they started out.
