tex2html_wrap_inline2083 On surface solar in v2.1 (noted 8/99): In v2.1, using clrad1, while the net surface solar appears generally close to such data sets as Darnell et al. (1992), Li et al. (1993) and Bishop and Rossow (1991), it does have a systematic bias when run with only 3 cloud types (even when these are specified from ISCCP). Net surface solar tends to be about 20-30 W/m tex2html_wrap_inline2085 higher than the Darnell et al. dataset over tropical oceans. This was noted when the QTCM1 was coupled with an ocean model (NCAR upper ocean model) and tended have a warm SST bias. Including a term that mimics the average effects of the omitted "exotic" cloud types (e.g. AsAc), which individually do not contribute greatly to reflected solar, but tend to add up, and including aerosols in the Fu-Liou scheme estimation brings the surface solar into line with the other surface solar estimates. This modification is not included in the standard v2.1 release. Effects have not been fully analyzed as of 9/1/99.
