...A Record Warm Summer at UCLA...

The summer of 2018 (defined as period June through August) started out mild.
The month of June recorded only one day reaching at least 80 degrees at UCLA
(three days are normal). The average June temperature of 66.3 degrees was only
0.6 degree above normal (ranked as the 16th warmest June on record).

Then July came along, and a record setting heat wave began after the 4th.
Triple digit heat was recorded on the 6th and 7th. A very rare summer, Santa
Ana wind helped to keep 100 degree temperatures going as late as 11:44 PM PDT
on 6th (fell to 86 degrees just before midnight). The 111 degree maximum on
the 7th* was the highest recorded temperature in campus history (previously
109 degrees on 20 September, 1939). The minimum temperature of just 78 degrees
on the 8th set a record, daily high minimum for July (prior to this year, it
was 74 degrees on 2 July, 1985). Helped by 18 days reaching at least 80
degrees (four of those days reached at least 90 degrees...four times the
normal such days in July), this month wound up the second warmest July on
record (average temperature 74.8 degrees...5.4 degrees above normal...0.1
degree below the 2006 record).

The month of August wasn't nearly as warm as July was. However, the monthly
average temperature of 74 degrees (3.5 degrees above normal) ranked it as the
third warmest August on record. There were 21 days that month when the
temperature reached at least 80 degrees (ten days more than normal for the
month). Two of those days reached at least 90 degrees (twice the normal days).

Taken as a whole, the average temperature for the three month period was 71.7
degrees (3.2 degrees above normal). This set a new record for the warmest
summer in campus history. The previous record was 71.6 degrees in 2006.
Looking back on recent summers, last year ranked as the 4th warmest summer;
2016 tied 1984 for 5th warmest; 2015 tied 1981 for 3rd warmest; and 2014 was
6th warmest. There was a streak of four cooler than normal summers prior to
2014.

* Temperature records for the campus are recorded in Greenwich Mean Time.
Using local time convention, the maximum temperature that day was 98 degrees.
